Desde El Correo: Tostones?

Check out Raleigh Chronicle’s review of the Oakwood Cafe in Raleigh.

“The folks of Argentina love their meats, which they celebrate often and generously at an asado, or cookout. They often substitute fried plantains as a side dish instead of a typical baked potato.

Here’s a little extra trivia that you might find interesting. Mexicans often substitute their tortillas for cornbread. Also, those in U.S. often substitute their sourdough bread for buttermilk biscuits. Whenever you are in at an asado or parrilla restaurant in Argentina, be sure to ask that your tostones are extra crispy.

“Argentineans, as a culture, have a sweet tooth so I surmise the cheesecake that sent me into orbit was more Italian given its rather clabbered texture and reliance on lemons and oranges rather than sugar for taste.”

I love my mother-in-law’s lemon pie. You know why I love it? Because it is so flavorful and does not contain one smidgen of lemon! All of the flavor in the delectable custard filling comes from the sugar!

  3. Tostones are not eaten in Argentina, in fact noobody here knows what they are. Also plantains do not replace anything at asados. In Brazil, plantains are cooked on grills at an asado, but Brazil is NOT Argentina!

In my 30 years living in Argentina (I’m 34) I have never seen a platain… If you tell people over there that they can eat fried bananas with asado they are going to give you a blank stare…

  7. Fried Plantains in Argentina? LOL. To the guy that wrote this dumb article, I dare you to bring Plantains to an Asado Argentino. You will end up the main course. Only vegetables you find at an Asado is ensalda russa / regular ensalada. I dont even think Plantains grow in Argentina.

  10. Heh, some people just never know how to RTFA Ronald. Just like another post here where a person assumed the piece was about something else from only looking at the pictures.

I could say THIS WAS A BAD ATTEMPT AT BEING SARCASTIC and i still wouldn’t be surprised if someone breezed over that statement for whatever reason.
