I know this is an old post but B&B Charcoal sells Quebracho lump in 44 lb bags. You can only order online (unless you live in S. Texas and can pick it up). I just ordered a bag and plan to give it a try next weekend.

Try twotreesproducts.com
I bought some lump from them that is not their mesquite brand, but rather it is packaged and shipped from Argentina, and labled only as '100% hardwood lump charcoal'. A product of Argentina. The lump is extremely dense- a 10# bag is almost half the physical size of US lumps. It just may be quebracho- I inquired to twotrees but have not yet received an answer.

Hey Matt,

>I’ve gotten adept at identifying various woods

I'm trying to get there. It's been so long since I've smelled hickory so hopefully my judgement is correct in this case.

Re: buying, I've stumbled across a few sites in the past where people aqcuired some lump charcoal in the States that happened to have both quebracho blanco and colorado. From what I remember they all came out of Texas. I'll do some searching and see if I can find something. Would be a good thing to post on.

Thank you for posting this. I've gotten adept at identifying various woods by the smell of their smoke, but have always been intrigued by "that asado smell" at my favorite parillas in Buenos Aires.

Now, if I could only find a place to get quebracho charcoal in the USA.
